This thesis focuses on predicting and comparing the metabolic capabilities of organisms based on their genomic sequences. For this purpose, new bioinformatic concepts have been developed, implementated, and evaluated. These concepts allow for the automated comparison of hundreds of sequenced genomes with respect to their metabolic genomes. In these studies, known as well as unknown metabolism-phenotype associations have been identified for several complex microbial phenotypes such as the preference of a specific niche. Based on some of the associations uncovered, it has been possible to derive directly testable hypotheses about the biochemical bases of specific health-related microbial phenotypes.
