Scientists of the Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (IDO) at Helmholtz Zentrum München, together with partners from the Sanford Burnham Institute in San Diego, California, USA, have discovered a key molecular interface in brown adipose tissue which regulates whether calories are stored or burned. Previous studies of the IDO in collaboration with the Sanford Burnham Institute already indicated that the protein p62 is involved in the regulation of body weight. Now the research group led by Dr. Timo Müller has shown for the first time that p62 functions as a cellular switch in energy metabolism. The findings were published in the current issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation and provide an important contribution to research on obesity and type 2 diabetes.
